County solid waste disposal future and Shady Grove Transfer Station impacts

City Solar and EV Charging Progress
Rockville has cut net greenhouse gas emissions 34% since 2005 — outpacing the region — and 56% of climate plan actions are complete. City projects include LED streetlight and building conversions, the first municipal solar installation at Lincoln Park, EV fleet charging, and electric senior center buses.
Food insecurity and resource waste
Commissioner Sushinsky wants the commission to dig into food insecurity and ways to redirect discarded furniture, wasted food, and fruit tree produce to people who need them.
Master Street Tree Plan includes invasive species
A resident found her new street tree had to be a sawtooth oak — an invasive species — because it's in the city's Master Street Tree Plan. The commission will discuss revising the plan.
Environmental sustainability of AI use in city operations
The city's new app and staff tools may use artificial intelligence, which carries energy and environmental costs. The commission will research impacts and best practices.
Water Service Shutoff
Rockville water customers are being warned that service will be shut off sometime this month, with no exact date given. Residents should plan for cooking, showers, and other daily water needs, and stock a few jugs beforehand.
Climate Action Committee outreach and recruitment
The Climate Action Committee wants to spread the word about its work — posting info at coffee shops and libraries, tabling at community events — and recruit more diverse members to reflect Rockville's population.
